Artist Bio

Fiorella is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary designer and retired hooper from Lima, Peru with a background in architecture, graphic design, and creative illustration. She currently works as an architectural designer, while also freelancing as a graphic designer and illustration artist focused on creating illustrations to benefit the greater good.

What is the inspiration behind your planter?

I drew inspiration from the first WNBA themed court in Canada - which I had the privilege of designing and illustrating, and used the same paint colours from the court to customize the planter.

What does growth mean to you?

Growth, to me, entails embracing being uncomfortable, seeking guidance, learning from failures, and persistence, to ultimately show young girls and women that it is normal to go through difficult moments. I am a firm believer that as human beings we must have the ability to adapt in order to grow. My most significant experience of growth was moving to Canada from Lima, Peru at a young age without knowing any English. Witnessing my family's resilience in adapting to a new country and its opportunities has shaped my belief in the power of growth. Similarly, my time as a student-athlete at the University of Toronto, facing academic demands and battling anxiety and panic attacks, further reinforced the significance of growth. Today, I am dedicated to using sport and design as catalysts to inspire growth in young girls, women, and communities, empowering future generations to embrace change and reach their full potential.

What does community mean to you?

Community, to me, is a profound sense of belonging and support, that is driven by collaborative effort to achieve common goals. As a passionate designer and baller, I have experienced firsthand how basketball can create a tight-knit community that is bigger than the game. My award-winning architecture undergraduate thesis exemplified how sport can serve as a catalyst to unite vulnerable communities, combining infrastructure, urban planning, sport, and play spaces in Lima, Peru. Furthermore, as the chosen designer for Canada’s first WNBA court, I aim to create a space that not only celebrates women’s basketball culture but also serves as a powerful hub for empowering women's basketball and the local community at large. My purpose lies in using my love of basketball as a vessel to encourage personal growth and positively impact local communities. I hope you choose me to be a part of your efforts to positively impact the next generation of young girls and women through sport and design.
