Artist Bio

Jadyn “machiinegunfunkk” Hardie-Bardy, is a queer Mohawk and Jamaican poet, beadworker and youth advocate living in Tkaronto. Her work explores cultural reconnection, destigmatizing monoliths and overcoming socioeconomic adversity faced while navigating colonial institutions. Jadyn uses her art to connect with youth navigating judicial and child welfare systems, advocating through cultural arts and lived experience speaking.

What is the inspiration behind your planter?

With my planter, I wanted to represent myself as a poet and beadworker. I wanted to share this through poetry and collaging. I am not typically a visual artist but I wanted to try something new!

What does growth mean to you?

To me, growth means looking inward, building yourself up and allowing yourself to reach new heights while leaning on and supporting those around you. However, in saying this, I don’t think growth is linear. I think it can be approached and measured in different ways.

What does community mean to you?

To me, community means kahsa’stèn:sera (strength). As someone who grew up in the Child Welfare system, community is the top priority in not only the work I do, but the lifestyle I live. To me, community means ensuring the futures of our youth, sustainability, empathy, togetherness and culture.
